First meeting a success!

Thanks to everyone who came to the first meeting of our reading club! Heather's classroom was cozy and welcoming, and we had plenty of coffee and goodies to go along with the discussion of Penny Candy.

We tried to keep things to a sensible time limit, but with enough time for all the little side discussions that invariably come up, so it looks like meetings will run from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

Next month's meeting will be on the third Monday in September, at 7:00pm. We've decided to read Anthem, a novella by Ayn Rand that provides a good introduction to her works. Heather has found an online source where you can read it: Anthem. If you'd rather have your own copy, you should be able to find it at the library or a used book store, or you can order it from amazon.com:

I'll try to post a picture or two from our first meeting; we had a great time, and I hope even more people will join us next month!

Suggested titles

JesseRoland.com said...

Actually "Penny Candy" is the 2nd book in the "Uncle Eric" series of books, there are about 11 of them in total, I found this out when looking for "Penny Candy" and I have already read the book that comes before it. you may want to check it out maybe we can read the whole series.

I've added those to my must-read list, too! I don't know if focusing solely on one series for that many months would interest everyone, though - any thoughts on that from anyone else? Personally, I'm all for having a huge suggested reading list, and focusing on a certain title at each meeting, because books are like Lay's chips to me - I can't read just one! (If we wanted to discuss other books outside the meetings, we could even post here...just an idea.)

In fact, I'm wanting to dive into some of the Founding Fathers' writings, probably reading Thomas Paine's Common Sense for starters. Does anyone think that might be a good choice for September? Marsha has pointed out that we may need to pick next month's title now, so that we will each have time to get a copy, and then we could decide on a list for future months, at this first meeting.

I have my copy !

Hi, everyone!

I'm so excited about our first meeting, and I just stopped by Heather's shop to pick up my copy of Penny Candy - I jumped right in, and am learning already.

If anyone wants to make suggestions of titles we could add to our reading list, feel free to leave a comment. I'll try to add more things to this page once we get started.

Have a great day!
